Lukas 7:32

7:32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to one another, ¹ 

‘We played the flute for you, yet you did not dance; ² 

we wailed in mourning, ³  yet you did not weep.’

[7:32]  ² sn ‘We played the flute for you, yet you did not dance…’ The children of this generation were making the complaint (see vv. 33-34) that others were not playing the game according to the way they played the music. John and Jesus did not follow “their tune.” Jesus’ complaint was that this generation wanted things their way, not God’s.

[7:32]  ³ tn The verb ἐθρηνήσαμεν (eqrhnhsamen) refers to the loud wailing and lamenting used to mourn the dead in public in 1st century Jewish culture.

[15:12]  ⁴ tn Grk “And the.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

[15:12]  ⁵ tn Grk “the”; in context the article is used as a possessive pronoun (ExSyn 215).

[15:12]  ⁶ tn L&N 57.19 notes that in nonbiblical contexts in which the word οὐσία (ousia) occurs, it refers to considerable possessions or wealth, thus “estate.”

[23:40]  ¹² tn The particle used here (οὐδέ, oude), which expects a positive reply, makes this a rebuke – “You should fear God and not speak!”

[23:40]  ¹³ tn The words “of condemnation” are not in the Greek text, but are implied.

[24:21]  ¹⁴ tn The imperfect verb looks back to the view that they held during Jesus’ past ministry.

[24:21]  ¹⁵ sn Their messianic hope concerning Jesus is expressed by the phrase who was going to redeem Israel.
